Common Scams to Watch For
Fake Websites & Online Ads
Fraudulent websites and fake social media advertisements may attempt to collect payment information or personal data.
Before Making an Online Purchase:
- Verify the website is legitimate
- Look for secure website connections (https)
- Research unfamiliar sellers
- Be cautious of prices that seem too good to be true
Important Tip: When shopping online, consider using a credit card or prepaid card instead of a debit card whenever possible.
Toll Bill Text Scams
Scammers may send fake text messages claiming you owe unpaid tolls or traffic fees.
Do not click suspicious links or provide payment information through unexpected text messages.
Gift Card Scams
Scammers often request payment through gift cards because the funds are difficult to recover.
A legitimate business or government agency will never demand payment by gift card.
Romance Scams
Fraudsters may build online relationships over time before requesting money, gift cards, or financial assistance.
Be cautious when sending money to individuals you have only met online.
